Enterprise Information portal

Also known as Enterprise information portal (EIP), an enterprise portal is a website designed to provide access to enterprise datas within a single interface, generally written in light server architecture (php or Java) joined to an ajax client application (browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Opera).

Called Intranet, or intranet portal, because it refers to internal datas of an enterprise on an internal network, this web portal is called extranet when its access is limited to partners on Internet.

A portal for each usage

A same web portal can be used for different uses:
  • As resource of informations (documents, reports, messages, articles, rss), this portal becomes an Enterprise information portal (EIP).
  • As provider of access to applications of enterprise, our web portal becomes an enterprise application portal (EAP), with an application server.
All these usages can be accessed by personnel (Intranet portal), by partners (extranet portal) or by anything (website).

As enterprise application software, the enterprise portal is closely linked to user and to user profile concept. Access to information depends on group to which an user is part from. It allows social networking or collaborative working.

On the other hand, the user profile make easy any customization, from graphical changes to insertion of modular elements (widgets in internet world, portlet in Java world) which the user may select, aggregate and organize in his or her workspace. A mobile version allows access to enterprise information while travelling.

Portaneo Enterprise Portal is one of these enterprise information portal. With such a protal, we can aggregate different applications and several resources in one web page.
